XDocs 3.5 paired an optional localization module with an expanded standard search capability. The December 2012 release focused on managing multilingual content cycles and finding content through its text and metadata.

Two release themes: a translation-localization process and a flexible query-based search.
The XDocs 3.5 localization round trip
The new XDocs Localization module supported content creation in multiple source languages, including language- or market-specific documentation created across an organization. Teams could define a localization project and then run it, exporting XML for use by translation management system (TMS) software.
On return, XDocs handled the crosslinks within the localized DITA content and integrated the target-language material into its repository. The announcement emphasized an iterative process: localization could begin before the entire source set was complete, and the returned content would be available for publication and the next content cycle.
Localization flow described in 2012
Packaging mattered: Localization was an optional module. The expanded Search capability was part of the standard XDocs CCMS offering.
Search across text and metadata
Build the query
Users with the required permissions could access a query builder, combining multi-attribute and full-text searches.
Explore the result
Search covered system and user-defined metadata. Result sets could be exported to CSV for use in other tools, including Microsoft Excel.
The original release connected these features to a wider goal: supporting the creation, updating, management, translation and delivery of content. Claims about reduced fees and faster time to market were presented as intended benefits; the announcement supplied no quantified project measurements.

Check the boundaries of the round trip
The most useful localization test follows linked content rather than a single isolated file. Select a small publication containing reused topics and references, export the intended set, then inspect what returns. Can the team identify the source state used for translation? Are returned topics connected to the right related content? Is a later change distinguishable from the version already sent?
For search, a similarly concrete exercise is to define a question before choosing filters: “Which items have the property values I need?” or “Which content includes this wording?” These questions help test metadata quality as well as the search interface.
