A packaged starting point for DITA content management

The announcement combined a repository, an XML editor, PDF rendering and Knowledge Base creation in the basic system.

What the basic package included

Bluestream described XDocs 2.0 as a component content management system for technical documentation, training material and Knowledge Base content. It was intended to support functional groups and departments that did not have the infrastructure for complex, costly customizations.

Authoring

A fully configured XML editor shipped with the basic system.

PDF output

The package included the XEP PDF rendering server from RenderX.

Knowledge Base

A Knowledge Base Creator supported another route for delivering content.

“The reputation of XDocs has been built on providing a no-nonsense, affordable package to organizations that want DITA but don’t have the six-figure budgets to bring in a system filled with bells and whistles they actually don’t need.”

“We believe that any group that has a single-sourcing need should be able to take advantage of this technology.”

The content model behind the package

XDocs was described as a single-sourcing solution for creating, managing and storing both XML and non-XML content. The release emphasized component management, content reuse and publishing through more than one channel. Its standards-based architecture was also presented as a foundation for organizations that wanted to customize the system for less conventional uses.

Evaluate the package through a complete content cycle

A bundle describes the starting configuration, but an evaluation must still connect the pieces. First, choose one small, representative publication and create its topics. Next, manage a revision and generate the intended PDF and online output. Finally, identify which parts work from the package and which require configuration, content preparation or specialist work.

  • Authoring fit: Can contributors produce the required content structures and maintain shared material?
  • Output fit: Does the pilot cover the reader-facing formats and presentation requirements?
  • Operational fit: Can the team explain ownership, review and publication without relying on an undocumented manual step?

Together, these prompts support a new evaluation. They do not report additional measured results from the 2009 release.
